This infrastructure initiative entails the development of a 367 km Standard Gauge Railway line connecting Tanzania and Burundi. The project includes 282 km of main line and 85 km of siding and passing loops, starting from Uvinza in Tanzania’s Kigoma region and ending in Gitega, Burundi. Divided into two sections—180 km from Uvinza to Malagarasi and 187 km extending to Musongati and Gitega—it aims to enhance regional connectivity and facilitate the efficient movement of goods and passengers across the East African Community, including Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda.
